Wet n’ Wild Weddings
If you’re opting for a slightly more unorthodox approach to your wedding, you’ll find Malta can help you out there too. Being an archipelago, it’s all about the sea, so Maltese nautical companies have made great lengths to tailor one of their key selling points to the alternative wedding market. As such, weddings on, or under, the sea in Malta are becoming more and more popular with locals and tourists alike.
Taking the Plunge
There are so many diving companies in Malta that if you want to speak to someone about arranging a blessing (NB. underwater weddings are not legally recognised) as part of a stunning dive in the Mediterranean, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’re into diving, Malta provides some of the clearest waters around with interesting dive sites encompassing caves, gullies, drop-offs, ancient temple structures reclaimed by the sea, reefs and teaming marine life if you time it right. Gozo’s blue hole dive at the inland sea and Azure Window is spectacular and there are also some great wreck dives off Valletta, St Paul’s Bay and Cirkewwa. Visibility in Maltese waters is fantastic and so, for the adventurous of spirit, would make a remarkable canvas for an underwater wedding.
A Wife on the Ocean Waves?
If you prefer to keep your head above water, there are plenty of opportunities to arrange a blessing and/or wedding reception on a boat, yacht or catamaran. Depending on your preference and size of your party, Maltese companies offer anything from top-end luxurious yachts and speed boats for personal charter to old-style classic Turkish Gulet cruises around the islands. Whether you choose to sail by day or by sunset, you can decorate your floating venue as you see fit, adding entertainment or catering to your liking. Most of the cruising boats are equipped with bars and the technical where-with-all to have a good party, plus they will provide transport to and from the boat if required.

Malta’s Turkish Gulet, available for exclusive hire, can take up to 200 people and is skippered with a full crew. The islands are your oyster as you tailor-make your trip with the captain, enjoying the freedom to opt for daytime sailing under the sun or a romantic sunset and night cruise beneath the stars. Plan stop-offs for swimming in deserted Gozitan coves or in the crystalline waters of the Blue Lagoon in Comino… whatever takes your fancy.
