This venue excels at:
Lavishly exclusive weddings with spectacular views across the Blue Lagoon from high up in the fortifications of this ancient watch tower. Let your imagination run free as you envisage your wedding party celebrating al fresco, surrounded by medieval roof-top turrets and the glistening turquoise waters of Comino’s infamous lagoon. Truly a venue of magnificence, stature and breath-taking position.
The Santa Marija Tower at Comino was once the military ‘guardian’ of the Gozo Channel, providing crucial communication links between Gozo and Malta via the Gozitan Cittadella and Mdina look-out posts respectively. Now restored impeccably by the National Trust of Malta, Din l-Art Helwa, this fort at Comino is open to the public for sight-seeing and available for hire for private events. Though not often considered for weddings, if you want a really special and unique event, this could well be the location for you.
Standing watch over the stunning crystal waters of Comino’s Blue Lagoon, Santa Marija Tower has 360 degree panoramic views out across the sea to Gozo and Malta from a regal position on its fortified roof. The inside of the tower is fairly small with old stone rooms and winding stone staircases that ascend steeply towards the heavens, revealing a large turreted roof area, perfect for events of around 100 people or so. The space is yours to adorn as you see fit with imagination and budget being your only restraints, however, you will need to negotiate with The National Trust of Malta to secure booking and access to the venue on an ongoing basis.
This is not a location to be taken on half-heartedly however. Comino has very limited on-shore resources so decor, catering, guests and so on will have to be brought in by ferry or private boat. There is one hotel on Comino, aptly named The Comino Hotel, which provides rooms and bungalows by the sea. The location is fantastic and it has all the usual amenities, but overall it is a 3 star establishment so be aware of this when putting guests up here. When looking into your event at Santa Marija Tower, it will most likely be suggested that the hotel do the catering so you are advised to check this out carefully to ensure it is in line with the quality of food you would expect for a wedding. There are external caterers that can help but again, it will all depend on how much you want to spend. If you have the budget, a wedding at Comino’s impressive fort could be something really special but it would require planning, money and commitment to pull it off. The exclusive views and access to the deserted Blue Lagoon by night, however, are priceless.
The legal stuff
Having made initial enquiries, it is possible to apply for a marriage license for a civil ceremony at The Santa Marija Tower. The National Trust for Malta would do this so they should be your first point of contact. Again, not plain sailing but worth it to marry on a practically uninhabited island overlooking the Blue Lagoon.

As mentioned above, this venue is not widely used for weddings but they do handle private events. The National Trust for Malta are very friendly and amenable so they should be your first point of contact when assessing whether to hire Santa Marija Tower or not. There will be a fee to hire the fort exclusively and this will be partly calculated on when you intend to hold your event i.e. if you require it to be shut to the public at peak hours in peak tourist season, they will look to recoup the loss in profits from visitors, but they will make this clear to you when you speak to them. The Trust will be able to give you advice from what they know of hiring out the Tower for private events but they will not plan your wedding for you so you should be prepared to roll your sleeves up or hire a wedding planner to handle the arrangements for you.
