Name of Beach: Ghajn Tuffieha
Location: Between the areas of Mgarr and Mellieha in North West Malta, on the opposite side of the peninsula to the highly popular Golden Bay beach.
Characteristics: Ghajn Tuffieha is very close to Golden Bay in proximity and as such, shares some of the same qualities such as deep golden-red coloured sands, shallow clear waters, great undisturbed views out to sea and some lovely sunsets. The beach is only marginally smaller than Golden Bay making it fairly sizable for a Maltese sandy beach. It nestles below refreshingly green cliffs that lend themselves to pathways that meander gently down to the sea. The atmosphere is one of natural tranquillity as opposed to the bustle of Golden Bay.
Popularity: The key difference between Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay is the fact that Ghajn Tuffieha is accessed via extremely long and steep steps making it more difficult for families with small children or elderly people to get down comfortably. As such, the beach is far less crowded than it’s highly popular neighbour, attracting a younger, more local sunseeking demographic. There has even been a surfer or two spotted at Ghajn Tuffieha, a sight pretty much unseen in Malta.
Facilities: There is a cafe at Ghajn Tuffieha that services the beach from its perch on the cliff side as you walk down. It has all the facilities you would expect or need on a beach but don’t expect much by way of watersports or beach activities; the charm of Ghajn Tuffieha is that it isn’t highly commercialised so it has retained its rural, undeveloped natural features and ambiance. There is a large car park but it is positioned at the top of the steps so has no visual impact on the beach.
Accessibility: Accessibility is both the problem and saving grace of Ghajn Tuffieha. The fact that it is more difficult to get to means the area is less developed but it is a strain carrying all your beach stuff down a couple of hundred steep steps. The car parks can get very full and you may end up abandoning your car on the roadside somewhere, but you’ll usually find somewhere to park. The buses stop at Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay regularly and are connected well to most places on the island.
Wedding Notes: Ghajn Tuffieha would be perfect for a romantic beach wedding set up – if only you could get there! Accessibility is really the only preventative factor. If you have a big enough budget to spend, you can arrange access to the beach via the sea for caterers and events companies i.e. decor set ups etc, but it can be really expensive unless you can bribe a local with a boat to help!
